About Me
Welcome, I’m Rosa K. Tousent, DNP, APRN, PMHNP-BC
My path to psychiatry began at a young age. As a child, I remember telling my father I wanted to study psychology. He was the one who suggested that I look into psychiatry since I also had an interest in medicine. After medical school in the Dominican Republic, I worked several years in the mental health field before returning to school to obtain my Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate in Nursing.
This journey allows me to care for patients from both a medical and nursing perspective, giving me a well-rounded understanding of total body health and informing a treatment approach that sees the bigger picture. I break complex ideas into clear, practical steps and create space for patients—especially parents—who may feel overwhelmed, defeated, or jaded by the traditional insurance-based system. This experience shaped my practice: I treat the whole person and ensure every patient feels heard, understood, and supported.
Experiencing life with my husband, who has a chronic illness, has shaped the way I view the intersection of traditional medicine and other nontraditional treatment modalities. From the patient perspective, I have firsthand experience with the limitations of seeking care through the traditional insurance-based system –– feeling rushed, not feeling fully heard, only being recommended medication and not exploring other options –– which has inspired me to be an out-of-network, integrative provider, so that I can provide a higher level of care.
Coming from a Hispanic background, I have witnessed firsthand the difficulties that come with trying to integrate into a new culture. These experiences deepen my advocacy for patients and families who feel unheard or exhausted by the healthcare system.
Outside of clinic hours, I am family-centered and curious about the world. I have been with my husband for almost 30 years. I am a big dog lover and advocate for animal rescue services. All of the dogs I’ve ever had have been rescues, including the two rescue Morkies we have now. I love to travel and explore new places, to spend time with friends and family, to cook (especially Latin food!), to watch movies and cooking competitions, to listen to all types of music, to dance, and to read.
Clinically, I have more than 30 years of experience with a wide variety of patients in different treatment settings, including the assessment and emergency departments, crisis stabilization units for children, adolescents, and adults, and outpatient care delivered both in person and virtually. My time working in crisis settings taught me to assess risk quickly, to communicate clearly with families, and to design practical plans that reduce acute distress while building long-term resilience. My experience equips me to work effectively with adolescents as well as adults.
My work is shaped by personal experience as well. My husband’s grandfather had Alzheimer’s, and we lived and cared for him with in-home hospice care until his passing at age 98, and now, with my mother’s current struggle with moderate dementia, I can empathize with the emotional toll caregivers go through when taking care of their loved ones. I understand the realities of families navigating loss and changing roles. I know what it feels like to put your own aspirations on hold to care for loved ones, and how isolating and overwhelming that can be.
